Join the SFS

The Society for French Studies is a major learned association that promotes French Studies in the United Kingdom and beyond. We hope you'll find all the information you need about our many activities on this site. If you have any queries, please get in touch with a member of the executive committee, or come and talk to us at the next SFS conference!

In addition to academics from a range of different countries, our membership includes librarians, curators and postgraduate students. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to support the aims and activities of the Society. A reduced rate is available to retired members, postgraduate students, members not in full-time employment, and new lecturers in their first three years in post.

What are the benefits of membership?

As a member of the Society, you will:

  • Receive all four issues of French Studies: a Quarterly Review published in the year of your membership and all four issues of French Studies: a Quarterly Bulletin
  • Have full online access to the complete archives for both French Studies (from Volume 1, 1947) and French Studies Bulletin (from Volume 1, 1981)
  • Be able to purchase the Society’s other publications at favourable rates
  • Enjoy preferential rates for registration at the annual conference
  • Be eligible for a range of funding offered by the Society, including for research expenses and organising conferences and workshops
  • Receive discounts on books published by leading French studies publishers

It is worth noting that the annual subscription is treated as an ‘allowable expense’ by the Inland Revenue for Income Tax purposes.

How do you join?

You can now join the Society and renew your membership online.

Use the red 'Sign up for membership' button on this page to start the process of creating a new membership online. You will need a credit or debit card. You can update your details through the member area at any time, but online memberships do not currently renew automatically. You will be emailed two weeks before your membership ends to prompt you to pay for your renewal. We plan to add the option to automatically renew online subscriptions in the near future.

If you wish to cancel your membership at any point, please let the Membership Secretary know.

If you are an existing member who joined the Society before March 2019, and pay for your membership by standing order, you do not also need to register online. You can still register for Society conferences and receive your membership discount without creating an account here. We will contact all members to invite them to convert to online management of their membership in due course.

Payment options

You can pay for your membership via our online system. The annual membership fee is currently £55 (€77) with a reduced rate of £27.50 (€39) for postgraduate students, those on temporary or casual contracts, unwaged/retired and new lecturers within 3 years of obtaining their first permanent post.
