SFS Annual Conference 2023

26 - 28 June 2023 |

Welcome to the registration page for the 64th Annual Conference of the Society for French Studies, to be held at Newcastle University, Monday 26th June–Wednesday 28th June. Please read the below information carefully prior to registering. Any questions regarding registration should be directed to the Conference Officer, Dr Richard Mason, at sfsnewcastle2023@gmail.com. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Newcastle in June!

Registration deadlines

Discounted early bird rates are available until Friday 31st March.

The final deadline for registration is Friday 21st April. Please note that registration for the conference will not be possible after this date.

Global rates

Global rates include hotel accommodation, hotel breakfasts, conference lunches and refreshments, drinks receptions and a three-course gala dinner with entertainment on Tuesday evening. Residential delegates will stay in ensuite accommodation at Motel One, a comfortable hotel in central Newcastle, approximately a fifteen-minute walk from the main conference venue. Delegates who do not wish to register for the global rates are able to select their desired options, including individual hotel nights, using the 'Non global registration options' below.

Sunday arrival and film screening

While the conference itself will take place between Monday 26th and Wednesday 28th June, delegates are able to arrive on Sunday 25th June should they wish by registering for the ‘Global 3 nights’ option. On Sunday evening, there will be a screening (venue and capacity TBC) of a short poetic documentary entitled Line 16: Travelling the Speculative City, to be followed by a Q&A with its makers, Dr Gillian Jein (Newcastle University) & artist Ronan Devlin, and chaired by Dr Fredrik Rönnbäck (New York University). This event will give delegates arriving on the Sunday an opportunity for informal socialising before the conference starts. To give us a sense of numbers, please check the relevant box at point of registration if you would like to attend.

Membership of the Society

Membership is open to anyone who wishes to support the aims and activities of the Society. A reduced rate is available to retired members, postgraduate students, members not in full-time employment, and new lecturers in their first three years in post. You can find more information here. In order to cover the administrative costs associated with the organisation of the conference, non-members are required to pay a £20 surcharge (£10 surcharge added to concessionary rates). This will be added automatically if you click 'No' when asked if you are a member. If you are not currently a member, but wish to join, please complete registration ticking ‘Yes’ when asked if you are a member, and then sign up for membership on the membership pages within seven days of registering.

Subsidised rates

The Society recognises the importance of supporting those who are studying, unwaged or retired to attend the conference and, as such, provides heavily subsidised concessionary rates for these delegates.

Postgraduate travel grants

As well as offering subsidised conference rates for postgraduate students, the Society is offering further support towards travel costs for students giving a paper or presenting a poster at the conference (NB information about the poster competition will be circulated in the coming weeks). Before applying, students should first seek financial support from their institution and/or funding body. Applications for funding not exceeding £100 should be addressed to the Conference Officer, Dr Richard Mason, at sfsnewcastle2023@gmail.com using the subject line ‘[SURNAME]: SFS travel grant application’ by Friday 21st April. Applications should include a breakdown of the costs and confirmation from the student that they do not have other sources of funding for their travel. Successful applicants will be required to send travel receipts to the Society for reimbursement, which will be processed following the conference.

Note: early registration pricing available until 31 March 2023
