About the Society
The Society for French Studies, the oldest and leading learned association for French studies in the UK and Ireland, exists to promote teaching and research in French studies in higher education.
The Society's activities include:
- Editing the French Studies quarterly journal and its companion French Studies Bulletin
- Editing the biennial catalogue of research projects in the UK and Ireland, Current Research in French Studies - now online.
- Editing the annual Directory of Postgraduate Research Students in French, which is free to members
- Hosting an annual conference with distinguished guest speakers and a variety of workshops across the spectrum of French studies
- Maintaining a website with rapidly expanding resources for those working in French studies
- Supporting research through:
- Conference and seminar grants for events in the UK and Ireland
- The R. H. Gapper annual prizes for scholarship at undergraduate, postgraduate, and book-publication levels
- Subsidising publication of Legenda Research Monographs in French Studies (with 33% discount to SFS members)
- Grants for postgraduate travel to the SFS annual conference, and reduced postgraduate conference and membership fees
- Extension of the postgraduate membership rate to new lecturers in their first three years of employment.
